Curious about children’s room design trends currently resonating with Ohio families? We are too. It’s always a challenge finding a balance between going “all in” on displaying an interest children have today while designing a bedroom environment parents are willing to agree with, and live by, in the family home – all while trying to pick colors and décor that will not be quickly, woefully dated as kids grow. (And they grow up so fast!) Based on a recent Houzz children’s room survey, these are the Top Five most prevalent children’s room themes for our part of the country:
Ohio’s strong affinity for the outdoors ranks at the top of the survey and is an excellent selection for both girls and boys. Think of colors, textures, and images that conjure up beautiful forests and lakes, cherished camping trips, animal wildlife, and indigenous trees & flowers. To create this environment, consider sticking with a color palette involving sage & forest greens, bark browns, golden yellows, stone greys, creams, and natural wood tones. In addition to speaking to our deep love of Nature, this top theme is particularly easy to implement in a gender-neutral and age-flexible way.
No surprise here, given Ohio’s rich history of sports teams and with Columbus being the home of the powerhouse Buckeyes. This theme could incorporate baseball, football, basketball, hockey, and soccer references – or even fishing, biking, and skateboarding artifacts. With Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati hosting some of the most popular teams in both college and professional sports, and with devoted fans across the country, it comes as no surprise that this theme scores highly with Ohioans. Of course, color palettes will be tied to the team colors and images will often showcase graphical logos and mascots. Ohio is definitely a sports fan’s paradise. Like Nature, sticking to a Sports theme is also a wonderful way to create a room both girls and boys will love and quite possibly never grow tired of (although, satisfaction may depend on how recruiting goes next year).
Another timeless theme that embraces and celebrates children’s love of animals and fascination with dinosaurs. The color palette is very open given the range of fur, feathers, and skin out in the wild – color choices will be shaped by the particular animals and wildlife scenes your children and you have in mind. Dinosaurs tend to work best for younger kids while woodland animals, aquatic life, safari scenes, and jungle imagery are appealing to a broader age range of children. The Animals and Dinosaurs theme can be done with custom murals, interesting wallpaper, or simply with curated artwork and bedding rather than making the entire room a dinosaur habitat worthy of a film. Another classic, gender-neutral theme too.
This theme embraces the awe & wonder most of us feel about the universe and can even pay homage to the sciences. To create this magnificent theme, consider ways of representing planets in our solar system, astronauts, aerospace engineering marvels (such rockets, satellites, and Mars Rovers), and, without question, endless stars and galaxies. As far as the color palette goes, consider navy blue and dark indigo walls with stars, stark white emulating a spaceship’s interior, or even a sophisticated, custom astronomy scene hand-painted by an artist. Yet again, these design elements are appreciated by girls and boys alike. The sky’s not even the limit on this one!
Given Ohio’s agricultural prowess and large variety of crops grown throughout our state, this one is especially appreciated. This theme incorporates barns, crops (such as corn, soybeans, apples, pumpkins), tractors, trucks, domestic animals (like horses, chickens, pigs, cattle), farm landscapes, and rustic wood into the design. The broader farmhouse aesthetic remains prominent in children’s rooms, and HGTV specifically identifies farmhouse and Western-inspired rooms as currently popular options. Consider applying barn reds, verdant greens, rust browns, tawny yellows, and natural wood stains as part of the color palette. This theme might even blend in nicely with the rest of the house – if you’re into farmhouse styles or clean Scandinavian aesthetics.
Current children’s room design trends are moving away from an entire room devoted to a cartoon or character and more toward a flexible base accented by themed accessories. For example, a woodland-themed room might have sage walls, wood furniture, and a few forest animal pieces rather than every surface covered up to the ceiling with trees and bears. All aforementioned Top Five themes are both pleasing and practical because they can remain attractive as a child gets older.
