With colder Central Ohio weather keeping most people indoors these days, we’ve seen a surge in residential interior work. One recurring question in residential projects is: what finish looks great and lasts for wood stairs? Here are five treatments that add beauty while withstanding all the trekking up & down wood stairs over the years:

Paint and Stain Combination – a timeless, aesthetically-pleasing style involving staining the step treads (horizontal section you step on) and painting the risers (vertical section between the treads). As of late, Trusted Coating’s most popular combination of this treatment has been bright white risers with natural stained, polyurethane treads – along with handrails stained in the same matching natural tone. This brightens up the stairwell beautifully and also allows homeowners to contrast, or blend in, surrounding walls and trim. Of course, using darker paints like charcoal grey, sage green, or navy blue can look great too, and add even more distinct character, with the right tread stain pairing. Lots of options with this treatment.

Stained Hardwood – this more traditional treatment is near & dear to all the woodgrain lovers out there. A tough polyurethane stain adds wear protection and can add mood to the stairwell according to your inclinations. Lighter tones create a clean modern, Scandinavian feel. Medium tones provide a classic, warm look and bring out the woodgrain artistry more prominently. Darker tones imbue a more dramatic, sophisticated aura and can even create an almost vintage presence.

Completely Painted – this entails fully painting the risers, treads, and even the trim in a single paint color. This is a budget-friendly way to create a more dramatic focal point. A chosen paint color can create a clean, minimalist look or add dark elegance. Another benefit to paint is that it can hide many ills in the steps – wood putty, strange knots, different wood types, etc. Of course, color choice needs to factor in the reality that stairs will be trampled on for years. Therefore, we also recommend selecting a high-traffic floor paint for durability.

Decorative Painting – necessary, practical stairs can also be a canvas to create a mood only limited by imagination (or fear of resale value taking a hit). Custom painting may involve something as simple as painting a contrasting band of color on the nosing, hand painting or stenciling beloved flowers on the risers, or even embracing a cacophony of colors and style elements to create a Moroccan or Art Nouveau immersion every time you trudge up those stairs for bedtime. This option is best for homeowners who really want to express their personality even with utilitarian home elements.

Slip Resistance – another treatment that leans more toward safety than aesthetics is adding some non-slip grit to the finish. This can be in the form of a clear anti-slip coating over the tread finish or an invisible grit added to the paint or stain finish. While the grit is relatively inconspicuous, you will feel some texture with bare feet. Nonetheless, “sandpaper / skateboard grip tape feel” on bare feet is much more comfortable than a slip.

Is It Deck Refinishing Time?

As family good times, social events, pet hangouts, and outside dining consistently head out to the back deck, it’s probably a good time to assess the state of your own deck (also known as the outside living room). Even with cold, icy Ohio winters, all the outdoor heaters, custom fireplaces, and firepit options we have these days allow the back deck to be a fun place to have a few (year-round) – whether it’s finger-numbing cold or hot enough to melt your prized Buckeye cake outside.

Yes, back deck aesthetics are important – always want to look good, blend well with your home’s color palette, and have a calming effect (interpreted as: no peeling paint, no layers of decaying organic residue obscuring the grain, and no splintering, rotting wood staring back at you) each time you walk out to sit & stare with a coffee or strum your acoustic guitar for the kids, cats, and dogs. Having stated this, we here at Trusted Coatings will tell you that protection is really the top priority.

We have refinished and power washed numerous Central Ohio decks throughout the years. So, in the spirit of protecting your family’s beloved back deck (while making it look great), here are a few tips on deck refinishing and maintenance.

Choosing a Protective Finish

Given Ohio’s hot, humid summers and cold, icy, snowy winters, we recommend considering three types of finishes for wooden decks:

Clear Sealers

Highlight the natural look of the wood
Offer water repellency but minimal ultraviolet (UV) protection (wood will still gray over time)
Best to be reapplied every 6–12 months in Ohio’s climate.

Best for: Newer cedar, redwood, or treated pine decks where woodgrain aesthetics matter.

Semi-Transparent Stains

Provide both color tint and UV protection while allowing some wood grain to show
They penetrate the wood surface, thus, reducing peeling risk
Typically lasts 2–3 years before recoating

Best all-around option given Ohio’s moisture and sunlight exposure conditions.

Solid Stains or Deck Paints

Form a film like paint and offer the strongest UV protection
Obscures wood grain but protects the longest (3–5 years)
It can peel over time, so maintenance involves cleaning and spot touch-ups

Best for: Older decks with discoloration, prior patchwork, or uneven wood tones.

Maintaining Your Deck Year-Round

Sweep leaves and debris regularly (prevents mildew and staining)
Each spring, clean and inspect for cracks, loose boards, and protruding nails & screws
Recoat every 2–3 years (or sooner if water no longer beads on the surface)
In winter, avoid using salt on wood (NaCl promotes splintering, cracking, and rotting of your deck)—use calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) instead to non-corrosively melt ice or use sand/cat litter to provide non-corrosive traction

1. Acrylic Latex Paint – Water-based and widely used for its durability, flexibility, and resistance to cracking and peeling. It’s easy to clean and works well on a variety of surfaces. Acrylic latex paints are the most popular choice for residential exteriors due to their ease of use, quick drying time, and long-lasting performance.

Benefits: durability and flexibility, fast drying time, low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and easy cleanup, excellent adhesion and coverage, and mildew & moisture resistance
Drawbacks: requires proper surface preparation, can dry too fast in certain conditions, and is sensitive to extreme heat or cold

Best For: interior walls, exteriors, ceilings, furniture (with topcoat), and areas exposed to moisture
Not Ideal For: high-impact areas, metal without primer, or projects needing a thick, self-leveling finish

2. Vinyl Acrylic Paint – A more affordable water-based option – commonly used for exterior walls and siding. It’s not as durable as 100% acrylic but still offers good adhesion.

Best For: stucco, masonry, brick, concrete, and surfaces exposed to harsh weather
Not Ideal For: interior walls, standard wood siding, or surfaces that need frequent repainting

6. Epoxy-Based Paint – Used for specialty applications, such as metal and concrete – offering high resistance to moisture and chemicals.

Benefits: extreme durability and impact resistance, high chemical and stain resistance, provides a high gloss, attractive finish, waterproof and mold resistance, and long-lasting with minimal maintenance needs
Drawbacks: complex and time-consuming application, more expensive compared to standard paints, can be slippery when wet (perhaps, inspiring reminiscence of a popular 80s rock album), and difficult to remove or recoat

Best For: garage floors, warehouses, basements, high-traffic areas, and chemical-heavy environments
Not Ideal For: walls, low-traffic areas, or surfaces that require frequent color changes

Ohio Environmental Considerations

While we’re on the subject of viable paint options, Ohio does have some progressive environmental restrictions to consider when selecting paints. Ohio has implemented regulations that restrict certain types of paint – primarily focusing on reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions to protect air quality and public health. Relevant Ohio regulations to be aware of include:

VOC Limits on Paint Thinners and Solvents:
As of July 1, 2023, Ohio prohibits the sale, supply, or manufacture of multi-purpose solvents and paint thinners that exceed 1% aromatic compound content by weight. Products manufactured before this date can be sold until January 1, 2026, provided they comply with specific product dating requirements.
